Temporary graduate

Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa.

This is a temporary visa that allows international students to live, study and work in Australia after they have finished their studies. It has two streams, the Post-Vocational Education Work stream and the Post-Higher Education Work stream.

Post-Vocational Education Work stream

This stream is for international students who have recently graduated with an associate degree, diploma or trade qualification that is relevant to specific occupations that are in demand in Australia. It lets you live, study and work in Australia for up to 18 months.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible under this stream:

  • You must be in Australia when you apply
  • You must be 35 or under (subject to certain exceptions)
  • You must hold an eligible visa
  • You must have held a Student visa in the last six months 
  • Your qualification must have been the result of at least 2 academic years of study in Australia
  • You must have studied a CRICOS-registered course
  • The qualification must be relevant to an occupation on the Medium to Long Term Skills Shortage List:  skilled occupation list
  • You must meet the English language requirement
  • You must have applied for an Australian Federal Police clearance

Post-Higher Education Work stream

This stream is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree or higher qualification from an Australian university. It lets you live, work and study in Australia for between 2 and 3 years depending on the level of your qualification.

Who is eligible

To be eligible under this stream:

  • You must be in Australia when you apply
  • You must be 35 or under (subject to certain exceptions)
  • You must hold an eligible visa
  • You must have held a Student visa in the last six months 
  • Your qualification must have been the result of at least 2 academic years of study in Australia
  • Your must have studied a  CRICOS-registered course
  • You must meet the English language requirement
  • You must have applied for an Australian Federal Police clearance

Can I include my family?

  • You can include some members of your family in the application (generally your spouse/ partner and your children). An extra Department Home Affairs application charge is payable by those additional applicants and they must also meet Australia’s health and character requirements.
